Pre-Ride Safety Checklist (The "ABC" Check)
Before starting your journey, perform this quick safety inspection to ensure your bicycle is roadworthy.
1. Tires & Wheels
Pressure: Apply your full weight to the saddle; tires should not bulge significantly.
Deformation: Roll the bike over a curb to ensure tires do not compress to the rim.
Stability: Ensure wheels are securely fastened and do not wobble when spun.
2. Braking System
Hand Brakes: Squeeze levers to ensure they aren't "soft." Confirm pads press firmly against the rim.
Back-Pedal Brakes: (If applicable) Pedal backward while pushing the bike to ensure the wheel locks.
Compliance: Ensure the bike meets local laws (some regions require two functioning brakes).
3. Saddle & Ergonomics
Height: Adjust the saddle so you can pedal comfortably and touch the ground with your feet when stopped.
Security: Ensure the seat post is tightened and does not slide or rotate.
4. Drivetrain & Chain
Alignment: Confirm the chain is seated on the front crankset and rear cogset.
Condition: Check that the chain is not excessively loose, sagging, or heavily rusted.
5. Visibility (Lights & Reflectors)
Reflectors: Verify all legally required reflectors are mounted and visible.
Lights: * E-bikes: Lights usually activate automatically.
Classic bikes: Spin the wheels to activate the dynamo lights.
Requirement: Lights must be used between sunset and sunrise.
6. The "Bounce Test"
Lift the bike 2–3 inches off the ground and let it drop. Listen for rattles or clanking that may indicate loose bolts or components.
What to do if a bike is damaged?
If any component is broken, missing, or feels unsafe:
Do not ride the bike.
Switch Rental: Use the Donkey Republic app to instantly switch your rental to a different available bicycle.
Report Issues: Report issues on the bike through the app.
