Safety First: The Pre-Ride "ABC" Checklist
Before you start your journey, perform this 60-second inspection to ensure your bicycle is roadworthy.
1. Air (Tires & Wheels)
Pressure: Press down on the saddle with your full weight. Tires should feel firm and not bulge.
Stability: Spin the wheels to ensure they are securely fastened and do not wobble.
Rim Check: Ensure the tire doesn't compress all the way to the rim when rolling over a small curb.
2. Brakes (Stopping Power)
Hand Brakes: Squeeze the levers. They should feel firm, and the pads should grip the rim tightly.
Back-Pedal Brakes: If your bike has them, pedal backward while pushing the bike forward to ensure the rear wheel locks.
Legal Compliance: Most regions require two functioning brakes—ensure yours are responsive.
3. Chain & Drivetrain
Alignment: Ensure the chain is properly seated on the gears (crankset and cogset).
Condition: Check that the chain isn't sagging, excessively loose, or heavily rusted.
4. Saddle & Ergonomics
Height: Adjust the seat so you can pedal comfortably and touch the ground with your toes when stopped.
Security: Check that the seat post is tightened and does not twist or slide down.
5. Visibility (Lights & Reflectors)
E-Bikes: Lights usually activate automatically once the rental begins.
Classic Bikes: Spin the wheel to activate the dynamo lights.
Requirement: Lights are legally mandatory between sunset and sunrise.
6. The "Bounce Test"
Lift the bike 10 cm off the ground and let it drop. Listen for rattles or clanking sounds that might indicate loose bolts or damaged components.
What should I do if the bike is damaged?
If any part of the bike is broken, missing, or feels unsafe:
Do not ride the bike. Your safety is the priority.
Switch your rental: Use the Donkey Republic app to instantly swap your rental to a different bicycle at the same hub.
Report the issue: Tap "Report Issue" in the app so our mechanics can fix it immediately.
